FAQ

Your questions, answered.

For South African, expat and international clients.

I’m South African living abroad — will my counsellor understand my context?

Yes. Our counsellors are South African and understand the cultural, political and historical context that shapes the South African experience — wherever in the world you live now.

I’m not South African — is MyTruth still for me?

Yes. We work with clients across the world. Our counsellors are trained to work cross-culturally, and many of our clients are international.

Is it legal to see a South African counsellor from my country?

In most countries, yes — online counselling across borders is generally permitted for registered counsellors. International clients are responsible for checking this in their country of residence.

How do I pay if I don’t have a South African bank account?

We accept all major international cards (Visa, Mastercard and American Express). Payment is processed securely online by Yoco, and your card provider sets the exchange rate at the time of payment.

Do you accept medical aid?

No. We don’t offer medical aid services. Sessions are paid privately, in full, when you book, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. We don’t claim from medical aids or provide claim forms.

Can I pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay?

Yes. On the secure payment page you can pay by card, Apple Pay (on iPhone, iPad or Mac using Safari) or Google Pay (on Android phones and in Chrome). The Apple Pay or Google Pay button appears automatically when your device supports it. You always pay in South African rand.

What platform do we use for sessions?

WhatsApp, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams — whichever you prefer. Your counsellor sends a private link before your session. You just need internet and a quiet, private space.

What time zones do you cover?

Our counsellors work in SAST (UTC+2) and EAT (UTC+3), with morning, afternoon and evening slots to suit clients in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia.

How do I choose a counsellor?

Browse the profiles, filter by what you need help with and your language, and pick the person you feel drawn to. You can change counsellor at any time — unused prepaid sessions move with you.

Are your counsellors psychologists?

Our counsellors are registered counsellors (HPCSA, ASCHP or CCSA). They don’t diagnose, prescribe or provide psychological assessment. If you need a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, we will help you find one and can work alongside them.

Is my information confidential?

Yes. Sessions are strictly confidential under the HPCSA, ASCHP and CCSA ethical codes and POPIA. We don’t share anything with employers, medical aids or family without your explicit written consent, except where there is an immediate risk to life or the law requires it.

Can I cancel or reschedule?

Yes — give at least 48 hours’ notice by email or WhatsApp and there is no charge. Later cancellations and no-shows are charged in full.

Do I have to stop using to join the addiction programme?

No. The programme uses harm reduction methodology: there is no abstinence requirement. If abstinence is your goal, we’ll work towards it with you.

Do you see teenagers?

Yes. Several counsellors work with teens aged 13–17, with verifiable written consent from a parent or guardian.

I can’t afford counselling right now. Can you help?

If you are in financial hardship, email accounts@mytruth.co.za. We will do everything we can to help.
