What is trauma?

Trauma is not only what happened to you. It is what happened inside you as a result — the way your mind and body learned to protect you when something was too much to bear.

It might come from one overwhelming event, like a hijacking, an assault or a sudden death. It might come from years of living with abuse, neglect or violence. It might even come from before you were born, carried through your family and community.

However it began, trauma can show up as anxiety, numbness, anger, shame, difficulty trusting, trouble sleeping, or a body that never quite relaxes. These are not signs of weakness. They are signs that you survived.

How we work with trauma

Every one of our counsellors is trauma-informed. That means safety comes first, you set the pace, and we never push you to retell your story before you are ready. We draw on inner child work, Somatic Experiencing, CBT and DBT, and person-centred approaches — and we work alongside psychiatrists and doctors where needed.

Questions about trauma counselling

What is trauma?

Trauma is the lasting effect of an experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope — a single event such as a hijacking or assault, or ongoing harm such as abuse, neglect or living with violence. It is defined less by what happened than by how it continues to affect you.

What are the different types of trauma?

People often talk about acute trauma (a single event), chronic or complex trauma (repeated, long-lasting harm), childhood or developmental trauma, sexual trauma, generational trauma passed through families and communities, and traumatic loss. Each has its own page on this site.

Can online counselling help with trauma?

Yes. Trauma-informed counselling works well online, and many people find it easier to feel safe from their own space. We go at your pace and never push you to relive what happened.

Do I need a diagnosis to get trauma counselling?

No. You don’t need a diagnosis, a referral or a label. If a psychiatric assessment would help, we can refer you and work alongside that professional.

What happened to you matters. So does what happens next.
